Peptide Research Glossary

Definitions of terminology commonly encountered in peptide science, laboratory research and analytical documentation.

Scientific literature and product documentation can contain highly specialised terminology. This glossary provides concise explanations of terms visitors may encounter throughout Peptissima's educational resources and research documentation.

Definitions are provided for educational purposes and may be simplified for accessibility.

A

Agonist

A substance that binds to and activates a receptor, producing a biological response that can be investigated experimentally.

Amino Acid

An organic compound that acts as a building block of peptides and proteins. Different combinations and sequences of amino acids give peptides their individual structures and biological characteristics.

Analytical Method

A laboratory technique or procedure used to investigate characteristics of a material, such as its identity, composition or purity profile.

Antagonist

A substance that binds to a receptor and blocks or reduces activation by another molecule.

B

Batch / Lot Number

A unique identifier assigned to a particular production batch or lot. It enables products to be linked with relevant manufacturing and analytical documentation.

Biological Pathway

A series of molecular interactions or processes occurring within a biological system.

Biomarker

A measurable biological characteristic used in research to indicate or investigate a biological process, condition or response.

C

Cellular Signalling

The processes through which cells receive, transmit and respond to biological signals.

Certificate of Analysis COA

A document issued by a manufacturer or analytical laboratory reporting analytical information associated with a particular product, sample or batch.

Depending on the document, this may include product identification, batch information, analytical methods and reported results.

Chromatography

A group of analytical techniques used to separate components within a mixture so they can be investigated or measured.

Clinical Trial

A structured research study involving human participants conducted under applicable ethical, scientific and regulatory requirements.

Concentration

The amount of a particular substance present within a defined quantity of solution or other material.

E

Experimental Protocol

A documented scientific procedure describing how a particular experiment or study is to be conducted.

G

GIP Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide

A naturally occurring peptide hormone involved in metabolic signalling and one of the receptors investigated within incretin-related research.

GLP-1 Glucagon-Like Peptide-1

A naturally occurring peptide hormone involved in several physiological signalling processes and extensively studied within metabolic research.

Glucagon

A peptide hormone involved in metabolic regulation and glucose homeostasis.

H

Half-Life

The time required for the amount or concentration of a substance to decrease by half under defined conditions.

The meaning and measurement of half-life depends upon the experimental context.

HPLC High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

An analytical separation technique commonly used to examine the composition and purity profile of peptide samples and other chemical materials.

I

In Silico

Research or analysis conducted using computational models, simulations or computer-based methods.

In Vitro

Research performed outside a living organism within a controlled experimental environment, such as laboratory vessels or cell-based systems.

In Vivo

Research performed within a living organism under appropriate scientific, ethical and regulatory oversight.

L

Ligand

A molecule that binds to another molecule, commonly a receptor or protein.

Lyophilisation Also known as freeze-drying

A process in which water or another solvent is removed from frozen material under reduced pressure to produce a dry material.

M

Mass Spectrometry MS

An analytical technique used to measure the mass-to-charge ratio of ions. In peptide analysis, it can be used for molecular identification and characterisation.

Mechanism of Action Often abbreviated to MoA

The biochemical interaction or process through which a substance produces an observed biological effect.

Molecular Weight

The calculated or measured mass of a molecule, commonly expressed in daltons (Da) or related units.

P

Peptide

A molecule composed of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds.

Peptides vary considerably in length, structure and biological function and are widely investigated throughout biological and biomedical research.

Peptide Bond

The chemical bond connecting one amino acid to another within a peptide or protein chain.

Preclinical Research

Research conducted before human clinical trials, which may include laboratory, cellular and animal studies.

Purity

A measure describing the proportion of the target material relative to detectable impurities or other components under a specified analytical method.

A reported purity result should always be interpreted alongside the analytical method and applicable documentation.

R

Receptor

A biological molecule, commonly a protein, that recognises and interacts with particular signalling molecules.

Receptor Agonist

A molecule that binds to and activates a particular receptor.

Reconstitution

The laboratory process of bringing an appropriate dried or lyophilised research material into solution using a suitable solvent under defined experimental conditions.

Research-Grade

A description used for materials intended for laboratory research rather than clinical or therapeutic use.

The term alone does not represent regulatory approval or a universal quality standard.

RUO Research Use Only

A designation indicating that a product is intended for research purposes rather than diagnostic, therapeutic or human use.

Products supplied through Peptissima are intended solely for legitimate laboratory research purposes where permitted by applicable law.

S

Sequence

The specific order of amino acids forming a peptide.

The amino acid sequence contributes to the peptide's structure and biological characteristics.

Solubility

The ability of a substance to dissolve within a particular solvent under specified conditions.

Solvent

A substance used to dissolve another material to form a solution.

Stability

The extent to which a material maintains defined characteristics under specified conditions over time.

T

Traceability

The ability to link a research product with relevant information such as its batch or lot number, manufacturer information and supporting documentation.

Triple Agonist

A compound designed to interact as an agonist at three different receptor targets.

Within metabolic research, this term may be used in relation to compounds investigated across GLP-1, GIP and glucagon receptor pathways.
